Electric vans, the 4.25t allowance, and why body weight matters more than ever

The rules around heavier electric vans have shifted again — and the latest change landed earlier this month. If you run a 3.5t recovery truck, or you're starting to wonder whether going electric makes sense, here's what's actually changed and why the weight of your body matters more now, not less.

The short version

There have been two changes worth knowing about. Last summer, the driving licence rules were relaxed so a standard car licence covers zero-emission vans up to 4.25t. And on 1 June this year, those same vans came off the heavy-vehicle testing regime and moved onto the standard van MOT schedule.

Taken together, they remove a lot of the friction that used to come with running anything heavier than 3,500kg. But there's a catch buried in the detail that matters enormously if you build your living on payload — and most of the coverage skips straight past it.

What changed, and when

The licence (June 2025). If you hold a category B (car) licence, you can now drive a zero-emission van up to 4,250kg without the five-hour training course that used to be mandatory. Towing was clarified too: you can pull a trailer as long as the combined weight of van and trailer stays under 7,000kg, with the trailer itself no heavier than 3,500kg. These vans are also exempt from O-licence rules.

The MOT (1 June 2026). Electric vans between 3,501kg and 4,250kg used to be treated like HGVs for testing — first MOT at twelve months, then every year. From the start of this month they've moved onto the standard van schedule: first MOT at three years, annual after that. The DVSA also lined up the HGV and trailer plating certificates to match. The Department for Transport reckons the change could cut testing costs and downtime by up to 60% for affected operators.

Both changes do the same job: they bring heavier electric vans into line with their diesel equivalents and take away the red tape that made operators think twice.

The bit nobody mentions

Here's the catch. That extra 750kg — the jump from 3.5t to 4.25t — is there to offset the weight of the battery. It is not free payload.

To qualify, the weight over 3,500kg has to be attributable to the electric drivetrain, not to your body, your equipment or the vehicle on the deck. Battery packs are heavy. So on an electric recovery truck the sum looks like this: 4,250kg ceiling, minus a chassis cab that already weighs more than its diesel cousin, minus the body, minus your winch, ramps, lighting and toolkit, minus the driver — and whatever's left is what you can legally recover.

In other words, the 4.25t allowance doesn't solve the payload problem that defines the 3.5t recovery market. It moves the goalposts, but the squeeze is still there. If anything, it's tighter, because the battery has already taken a bite before you've loaded a thing.

Which is exactly why the body has to be light

We've said it before about diesel 3.5t builds, and it's even more true here: every kilo you save on the body is a kilo you can carry on the deck — a kilo you can bill for, legally, without sweating the next weighbridge.

On an electric chassis you don't have spare weight to give away to a heavy steel body. The battery has already used up your headroom. A properly engineered full-aluminium beavertail gives you back the difference, and it does it without flexing, fatiguing or rusting out three winters early. The strength comes from the design — correct gauge, correct welds, correct sub-frame — not from piling on mass you can't afford.

Put simply: on an electric recovery truck, the body is where the payload battle is won or lost.

So — is an electric recovery truck right for you yet?

Honest answer: it depends entirely on what you recover and where.

If your work is urban or short-radius — predictable routes, recoveries that sit comfortably inside the weight limits, a yard you return to each night — the numbers are starting to make sense, and the running-cost and access-zone benefits are real. If you're a high-mileage motorway operator routinely dragging larger vehicles back across the country, range and payload may not stack up against a diesel 7.5t yet.

We'd rather tell you that up front than sell you a body for a truck that won't do your job. That's the same advice we give anyone weighing 3.5t against 7.5t: work out what you actually recover, day in and day out, before you commit to the chassis.

A word on the rules

Don't take our word as gospel on the licensing — check your own situation. There are conditions attached (how long you've held your licence, where and how the van is used, towing limits, tachograph rules near and beyond 100km from base), and the framework is still being tidied up by the DfT.
